Book 1 in the Draegan Lords series
A hundred years ago, the high sorcerer of Velensperia launched a swift and deadly attack against the draegans—a race of dragon shapeshifters who’d always lived in harmony with the humans. The draegans were all but destroyed, with the few who remained, scattered and in hiding. Now, a group of them have united and begun to fight back. Their leader, Keiran Hareldson, seeks to free his people from the cruel repression the high sorcerer’s reign has imposed on them.
Gaige Rizik is captain of the sorcerer’s High Guard, and known for his lethal ability to hunt down his prey with no remorse. His orders are to infiltrate the draegan rebels’ camp, learn their plans, and identify their leader so he can be destroyed. But when Gaige joins the rebels, posing as a human sympathizer to the draegans’ cause, he discovers the shapeshifters aren’t the bloodthirsty beasts he’s been led to believe, and their leader is a passionately captivating man who only wants what’s best for his people. Keiran sparks powerful emotions in Gaige, tearing down his walls of steely control, and stirring a longing in him he can’t deny.
Torn between his duty to the high sorcerer and his growing feelings not only for Keiran, but for the draegan way of life, Gaige knows he’s damned no matter which he chooses. In a world of lies, deception, and dark secrets, one false move will bring destruction to all he’s begun to hold dear. With the fate of so many lives on his shoulders, Gaige’s only hope is to follow his heart...and pray it’s true enough to save them all.

Reviews (for original edition)…
“True of Heart is a wonderful fantasy story that involves all the great elements that I look for magic, intrigue, romance, faith and redemption. Throughout the story we can see Gaige growing into the man he might have been if he hadn’t lived under the Sorcerer’s command. And Keiran is wonderful in his strength of character and in his faith of Gaige’s good heart. Yet, the eroticism of the encounters between Gaige and Keiran will scorch you every time.” —Sabella, Joyfully Reviewed

If you like reading about two men having a very heated very heavy physical relationship then this is the book for you. The author goes into a lot of detail about their `adult' relationship, which at times, felt like a crutch. Still I liked the characters and the back ground story. The author developed a world that made sense (magic and all) it is a time of darkness and uncertainty. The world is coming to a head and you don't fully understand what is really going on (and I liked that). I know this is the first book in a series of books so setting up the story is important and I think the author managed that very well. Still I wish there was more story set-up and less about how the characters always `wanted' or `needed' each other. Sadly I didn't really believe it, it seemed way too rushed for me. I read the whole book hopping for more detail and I never got it. I understand all the reasons behind the intensity of the characters, but still, I would have been happier with less sex and more story and way more character development. The book left me in a very good please overall I want to know about these characters who they are and what drives them, we got a little of that in this book, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to them next.

True of Heart The Draegan Lords Book 1 edition by M L Rhodes Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This was a very enjoyable book and the first book with a dragon I've read.
Gaige and Keiran are very good characters. I liked that at the beginning Gaige was oblivious of Keiran's identity, but he was captivated by the qualities as a leader that Keiran couldn't suppress. There is an incredible physical attraction between them. Since I love anticipation, I thought that it came a bit too early in the book, but it's also true that Gaige had been in the camp for a few weeks before he and Keiran acted on their attraction.
There are a couple of things that didn't really convince me. Gaige is undercover in the Draegan camp. He is presented to us as a man with the fame of a ruthless warrior and he tells many times that he is an extension of the High Sorcerer's power, since he is the captain of the guards. His more compassionate side is shown many times, but I think that his leading qualities were not shown enough. His strength didn't come out enough and I would have loved that the conflict in his loyalties had also become a conflict in his personality, in the process of shedding his brutal past.
I also must confess that although I love tenderness, the dialogue at the end of the book was a bit stilted and stereotyped. It was like the author had run out of space and the Love words, the Hurt/Comfort words, the Mate things, etc. were too compressed. The characters are deeper than that, they could do much better in my opinion.
I am definitely going to read the sequel.
Rating 4 stars
I stumbled on this book and decided to give it a shot. I really liked it. I liked both the MCs. I thought Gaige and Keiran had good chemistry together. The book wasn’t perfect by any means. Too many things were predictable, and it didn’t exactly bring anything new to the table, but despite that I really enjoyed it. It kept me entertained and really at the end of the day that is all that matters.
I mostly enjoyed this book.
The plot
Draconian wizard has been ruling and terrorizing the land for over 100 years. He has been killing off dragon shifters and seeks to kill their rebel leader by infiltrating his camp. Gaige, the white Panther, is sent on the mission. He finds the camp and realizes that draegans are not the bad guys. Where will his loyalties lie? Will he give up he rebel leader or turn traitor to the wizard? Aside from the insta-love, insta-mate I liked the conflict set up in this book.
The characters
Kieran, the draegan leader, was likeable, although kinda perfect with no real flaws that I could see. Gaige, the infiltrator to the rebel camp, was a little more complex, but not by much. Still, I liked them together even if they got very mushy and lovey. Secondary characters were very one-dimensional. Hopefully, the characters will show more depth in the next book.
The writing
This part fell flat for me. There was a lot of telling in the beginning of the book, which didn't leave a lot of room for discovery as the story progressed. Also, we took big jumps in time which didn't allow us to see a character's journey/arc.
The Heat
These guys couldn't keep their hands off each other and were pretty hot together. Fun fact draegan's have self-lubricating members (when wet). How handy is that?
Overall
I'm intrigued enough to want to read the next book. I just won't expect a 4 star read and I'll be a-okay with it.
I loved the Draegan Lords stories when I first read them years ago, and this retelling does not disappoint. A perfect blend of fantasy and hot, sexy heroes. I can't wait to continue reading the series.
If you like the fairy tale type reads, shifter dragon/human mates and sorcerers magic, you'll enjoy this read. Although this is far from my chosen type of read, there are some hot, sexy scenes, which made the read. I enjoyed it.
I just started reading gay themed books and I have to say a thoroughly enjoy them. I have been reading fantasy types of books all my life, such as Laurell K Hamilton, and others like her. M.L Rhodes has now become one of my favorites. As a 35 year old gay male I have to say it's great to be able to read books with witty strong gay characters such as this series. It disappoints me that she plans to end this series I think I speak for most when I say I hate for things to end it sucks when you get to know a world and its characters and know that it is going to end. Don't let that keep you from buying this series, because it will have you going through all the emotions from laughing to crying.
I purchased the original hard copy of this book years ago🤓. It's an absolute all time favorite. Now I'll be able to read it again and again (which I do) without schlepping the book around. P. S. I'm getting all the series! Plus so excited for the finale!!!
